Dealing with Depression Biblically

Ps 31:10 For my life is spent with grief, And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my iniquity, And my bones waste away.

Main Passages - Psalms of David, 2Sam 7, Gen. 4:3-8

What is depression?

To be down or low spiritually, emotionally or physically

Every man has low points in life for some reason:

1. Family problems
2. Money problems
3. Health problems
4. Emotional problems
5. Relationship problems
6. SIN PROBLEMS

Whatís the common theme? * Problems...

Can we avoid problems? No!

Not all problems are self-inflicted sin problems:

Paul had problems with others...

Peter had problems with others...

Dealing with depression Biblically:

Problem - We cannot avoid problems in life. We sometimes respond unbiblically to lifeís problems. This unbiblical response often takes the form of depression, being down about the problem.

Solution - Respond biblically to lifeís problems.

For the Christian, depression is a spiritual problem. You may only be down in the dumps for an hour, for a day, for a week. Regardless of the amount of time that youíre depressed, youíve still responded unbiblically.

Note: Thereís a difference between being "Sad" and being "Depressed". You can be sad about things and not sin! Sadness does not have a self-focus to the point that you cannot do whatís right. Sadness is the initial response to a bad situation or problem, but you continue to do the right thing before God.

1st Example Ė Youíve sinned and you know it! The biblical response is to be sad that you sinned at all and repent "right away" and begin to do the right thing before God. (see 2Cor. 7:10)

2Co 7:10, For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

2nd Example Ė Youíve sinned and you know it, but you will not confess it and continue to be involved in the sin or deny that itĻs a spiritual problem. You feel guilt, but still refuse to repent, but rather blame others, justify yourself while all the time you know whatís right and youíre miserable because youíre not doing whatís right before God. This is depression!

For Christians, Depression caused by sin is MOST Miserable, because God has given us:

The Holy Spirit to Convict us of our sin (John 16:7-8)

A New Nature Convicts (Rom. 6:10-12, Gal. 5:17)

Godís Word Convicts (Heb. 4:12)

Godís Chastening Hand that Confronts us (Heb. 12:6, Prov. 3:12)

As long as we are not responding properly to our sin problems...

the guilt,

Godís chastening,

the lack of Fellowship with God

and the consequences of sin will weigh us down, spiritually, emotionally and eventually physically.

Davidís State of Depression because of his own sin!

Ps 31:10 For my life is spent with grief, And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my iniquity, And my bones waste away.

Ps. 32:1-6

Ps. 38:1-10

The Saint that ignores his/her sin can always expect God to intervene:

2Sa 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.

Luke 22:61, And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." 62, So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Cain - The perfect example of not responding properly:

Gen. 4:3-8
