The
truly good news is that this same, loving and just God also provided
an escape for that punishment by sending his son, Jesus, to Earth.
Jesus’ sole purpose was to bear the punishment for all the sins of
the world. He alone is our "door" to heaven. There is no
other way in. Although Jesus was the son of God, He became a man just
like us, yet he never sinned.
Jesus lived a
perfect life, died willingly on a cross to pay the penalty for our
sins, was raised from the dead, and now lives in heaven. An innocent
man took the blame for our sinfulness. This act of God is described in
John
3:16-17 like this: "For God so loved the world that He gave
His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish
but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
Jesus’ death on the
cross erased our sins and removed the one barrier separating us from a
relationship with Him. He became our salvation. Romans
5:8 states: "God demonstrates His own love toward us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
This is how a
loving and just God dealt with the problem of our sin. He provided the
one and only way to heaven–through belief and trust in
God's son, Jesus, as our Lord and Savior. In John
14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through me." You must receive Him
in order to live in heaven after you die. There is no exception.
What
does it mean to believe?
